The Archives of the Archbishop of Malta, located in Floriana, contain the diocesan records from 1531-1898, along with some miscellaneous items dating from 1450-1928. These documents are housed in Floriana.

From Microfilms to Digital Media

The Hill Museum & Manuscript Library began microfilming the archival collections of the Cathedral of Mdina, Malta, in 1973 under the direction of Mgr John Azzopardi. Filming concluded in 1989 after 8,229 books and manuscripts had been filmed. The microfilming project at the cathedral also included books, music manuscripts, and archival materials from other ecclesiastical institutions and private collections in Malta and Gozo. The contents of the materials filmed date from the eleventh to the twentieth century.

Among the various manuscripts microfilmed in Malta we find the Archives of the Archbishop's Curia in Floriana.

The Archives of the Archbishop of Malta contain the diocesan records from 1531 to 1898, along with some miscellaneous items dating from 1450 to 1928.

The Archdiocese of Malta has transferred all its microfilms into digital media to make them available over the internet. This will enable the Archives to be more accessible by researchers and the casual visitor alike.

The Archives of the Archbishop of Malta hold more than is being published here. Researchers and visitors are more than welcome to visit and do research at the Archives of the Archbishop at the Archbishop's Curia.

This is an ongoing project and the Archdiocese of Malta is still digitising Manuscripts found escpecially in the Mater Dei and Sancte Laurenti Archives.

Before starting to browse through the Manuscripts you have to SIGN IN with your user name and password. If you are a new user please click on CREATE ACCOUNT. You are asked to Register so that you can view or purchase the manuscripts you need. Registration is FREE.

Browse through the Manuscripts

You can browse through the manuscripts. You search for manuscripts either through the Catalogues Section or else through a General Search. When you find the required manuscript click on VIEW. The Manuscript Catalogue Card appears. If you wish to browse through the manuscript click on PREVIEW. To preview a manuscript you have to sign in with your user account. To buy specific manuscript pages click on DOWNLOAD.

The manuscript flipper needs Adobe Flash to be installed and at least IE 9 or Google Chrome or Firefox running.

If Adobe Flash is installed and you still cannot view the manuscript, check that you do not have ActiveX Filtering on. To switch off ActiveX Filtering in Internet Explorer 9 or 10 click/tap on the gear icon at the top right, and click/tap on Safety. Click/tap on ActiveX Filtering to uncheck it, then refresh (F5) IE9 or IE10 to apply.

If you are running IE8 and do not wish to upgrade to IE9 or IE10 we suggest that you use Google Chrome.

If you are using an iPad we suggest that you browse this website using PUFFIN Web Browser. The Puffin browser can be used on Android Tablets and Phones.

Why Download

You can browse through the Manuscript Flipper for free as much as you want. You browse the Manuscript Flipper by clicking on PREVIEW.

In order to make download time faster to flip through the manuscript pages we had to opt for a lower resolution. However when you download the requested pages your download will automatically opt for the optimal resolution available. If you need to download pages from the manuscript indicate which pages you wish to buy as if you are printing them. It is important that you quote the page number on the Manuscript Flipper not on the Manuscript itself. Then click on DOWNLOAD.

Payment for downloads

To download pages from the manuscript indicate which pages you wish to buy as if you are printing them. It is important that you quote the page number on the Manuscript Flipper not on the Manuscript itself. Then click on DOWNLOAD. For each page you download you are charged 50 euro cents of which 47 euro cents go to PAYPAL. When you are done with your choice of pages click on MINI CART to proceed on with your payment through PAYPAL.

Downloads

Downloaded PDFs are password protected. The password is the e-mail address you have registered with this site. We suggest that you SAVE your downloads to your PC.

In case you need to download again the purchased documents, click on your USERNAME (top right) and choose MY VOLUMES. Choose the document you wish to download and click on DOWNLOAD.
